Pomorie Municipality starts the implementation of the project “Holistic approach to waste management in the transition to a circular economy”, co-funded by the LIFE Programme of the European Union with an informational campaign on the benefits of separate waste collection.

The pilot area of the project is the whole Svoboda district in Pomorie, or a total of 32 blocks, with approximately 1 000 households.
For each residential building has been assigned one responsible person who will monitor the correct distribution of waste streams and will assist in solving and eliminating problems and inconveniences during the test period.
The campaign aims to reduce the amount of the total household waste, which is crucial for the waste fee calculation. Its reduction can only be achieved through the diligent and responsible separate collection of recyclable biodegradable waste, which can be reprocessed to produce methane gas and compost. An example of the achieved results is the campaign held for one month in one residential building in Pomorie, where the households managed to reduce the amount of their total waste by 70%, which means a reduction of the waste collection fee by the same percentage when the new regulations of the Local Taxes and Fees Act enter into force.
During the first of several meetings with the responsible residents and the household members in the area, the mayor of Pomorie noted: “This is a very important project for the town of Pomorie, which will expand and cover the whole municipality. I am convinced that with teamwork work we will achieve the necessary results, and Pomorie will be an example for many other cities. This project directly affects all residents of Pomorie. Reducing the transport and disposal costs will enable us to improve many of other activities of the municipal enterprise for waste collection – “Chistota Pomorie” EOOD, which will also have a direct impact on the city and its image.”

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Mayor for Budget and Finance Yancho Iliev, the project manager Georgi Petkov and the project management team.
For the separate collection of paper, plastic, metal and glass, each household will receive the necessary yellow and green bags. For biodegradable, food and organic waste, households will have brown containers both at home and at the waste disposal sites. Mixed household waste that cannot be recycled needs to be disposed in the currently existing containers for this kind of waste.
