A meeting with household members was held in the area of P. K. Yavorov Street in Pomorie in relation to the extension of the separate waste collection system in the city. The meeting was part of the activities of the project “Holistic approach to waste management in the transition to a circular economy” of Pomorie Municipality.
New households, outside the pilot area – Svoboda district, were included in the project, which is co-financed by the LIFE programme of the European Union. It introduces an innovative door-to-door waste collection scheme to implement the pay-as-you-throw principle. The event brought together representatives of the municipal administration, waste management experts and residents of the area, who had the opportunity to get acquainted with the introduced changes and ask questions, if necessary.
During the meeting, the organisation of the new separate collection area was presented, as well as the types of waste that will be collected separately – paper and cardboard, plastic and metal, as well as glass, as well as their disposal. The main topics of the meeting were the environmental benefits of separate collection and the reduction of the amount of landfilled waste.
The new rules apply to residents of P. K. Yavorov Street in the section from the Evangelical Church to the building of Ivan Vazov Secondary School (the small school) on the side of P. K. Yavorov Street, Knyaz Boris I Street and the adjacent intersection streets.
Each household has already received yellow plastic, paper and metal sacks and grey non-recyclable mixed waste sacks. The bags will be collected every Wednesday from the front door of each home.
Brown kitchen buckets with biodegradable bags were also distributed. They will be used for the collection of food waste, which is disposed of in the brown buckets in front of each building and which will replace the existing green buckets for mixed waste. A truck that will transport the collected biodegradable waste directly to the Anaerobic plant in Burgas will pass on Wednesday and Saturday.
Participants in the meeting expressed interest in the initiative and discussed concrete proposals for its more effective implementation. The representatives of the municipality, including the Deputy Mayor Yancho Iliev, assured that they will continue the information campaigns and the active dialogue with the citizens, but also pointed out the responsibility of the households for the successful implementation of the separate collection system.
With the implementation of this initiative, Pomorie Municipality takes another step towards more sustainable waste management and environmental protection.
