A new method of household waste collection in Svoboda district– Pomorie

The project of Pomorie Municipality ‘Holistic approach to waste management in the transition to a circular economy’, co-financed by the LIFE Programme of the European Union, introduces a new door-to-door waste collection scheme in order to implement the ‘pay as you throw’ principle. The test area of the project covers only the Svoboda district in Pomorie. Тhe households received 40 liter grey waste collection bags equipped with an individual RFID tag/label giving information about the specific household disposal. Once a week, the bags are brought out to the door of the entrance, from where specialized vehicles equipped with readers collect them and in real time provide information on the number of discarded bags from each household.

The existing grey containers will be completely removed, as the way of disposing of household waste in Svoboda district remains only through the provided gray sacks. This, in fact, is also the waste that will be subject to charging and the smaller its quantity, the less will be paid for the waste collection services.

Only waste that cannot be recycled is placed in the grey bags. For all other types of recyclable waste – paper, plastic, metal, glass, as well as food and biodegradable waste, new garbage containers branded with the necessary information have already been installed. The new shelter-type vessels shall have controlled access and shall be used with chips provided for that purpose. It is also planned to install video surveillance on the points that do not currently have one. The aim is to ensure that containers are used only by residents of the district, to restrict access to other persons and to control the littering of other types of waste.

Separately collected waste will also be collected by type from specialised vehicles and delivered to the relevant recycling sites. For the recycling of clean and separately collected waste, the Municipality, respectively the citizens, do not pay a fee.

Demonstration meetings with households on the proper use of the new eco-sites were also held.

Through an app for mobile devices, each registered person will be able to receive timely information about the collection schedule, separate collection points, the amount of waste disposed from the household, spent and remaining bags, and other useful information.

The necessary consumables are distributed free of charge to households by the respective managers by residential building, and their contacts are available on the information boards at each entrance.
