The Mayor of Pomorie Ivan Aleksiev, the Deputy Mayor Yancho Iliev and representatives of the management team of the project “Holistic approach to waste management in the transition to a circular economy” were on a working visit in the Municipalities of Parma and Cappanori in Italy.” The project is co-financed by the European Union through the Programme for the Environment and Climate (LIFE).

The reason for the visit was Parma’s experience in the separate waste collection in order to exchange good practices. The Municipality of Parma is one of the first in Italy, with a percentage of separately collected waste over 80%.

During the visit, together with the project partners – Theoremus, Club Economika 2000 and Ecobulpack Bulgaria, the Bulgarian delegation attended a presentation focused on the organization of the waste collection service; visits to the IREN’s paper, cardboard and plastic sorting plant in Parma, to the Eco-Station and to the Bulky Waste Collection Center.

The visits were personally led by Gabriele Folli – representative of Italian project partner and former Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Parma, who introduced the pay-as-you-throw system (PAYT) in the Italian municipality in 2012. During the official meeting with the Bulgarian delegation the Mayor of Parma, Michele Guerra, also expressed support for the innovative project.

Together with representatives of the Italian project partner – Zero Waste Italy, the delegation visited the Research Centre of the Municipality of Capannori, the IREN composting plant in Gavassa, the social enterprise Terra di tutti for intercultural craft and creative reuse workshops, as well as the DueVolt Reuse Centre for electrical and electronic equipment.

“Holistic approach to waste management in the transition to a circular economy” is a pilot project for Bulgaria, aiming to introduce a comprehensive and innovative approach to waste management – a payment system for households and for businesses, based on the amount of generated waste. The project is co-financed by the LIFE Programme of the European Union. The Grant agreement was signed between the Pomorie Municipality as a coordinating partner, and The European ClimateInfrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).
